今日は以前、外人の知人に聞かれた日本の七五三についてです。
日本には日本独自の習慣や慣習が数多く存在します。
七五三もその１つですね。アメリカには七五三のような習慣はありませんが、
１歳の誕生日の時に特にハワイ等では盛大にお祝いをします。
しかし七五三のようなのはありません。
外人さんには、たいへん興味のある日本の習慣の１つだと思います。
興味を抱いて頂けるなら出来るだけ丁寧にシンプルに説明して
もっと好きになってもらいたいとお思いの方も多いと思います。
さてどうしたものでしょうか？
なにぶん異国に無い文化ですから、説明は少し難しいですね。
お役にたつか分かりませんが英太郎が以前、知人に説明した
英語でざっくりな七五三説明をご紹介させて頂きたいと思います。
友達のアンディにスマホの写真を見せている時、
私の子供たちの七五三写真がありアンディの目に
大変興味深く映ったのか、こんな話になりました。
英語七五三を説明する

Shi Chi Go San is one of the most traditional ceremonies in Japan.
753は日本伝統の１つなんだ。
Shichi means 7, Go means 5, and San means 3 in Japanese.
753の数字の意味は7,5,3の数字を日本語で言っただけ。
We celebrate our children’s birthday, but especially 3rd and 7th year for girls,
and the 5th year for boys.
特に3歳と7歳の女の子、5歳の男の事の誕生を祝うものなんだ。
Andy, are there any similar customs in the US?
アンディ アメリカで同じような習慣ってあるかい？
Andy:
Well I guess the biggest party would be their first year birthday party.
そうだなだ アメリカでは1歳の誕生日を盛大に祝うよ

On the day of Nov 15th, we bring our kids to Shrine.
11月15日、子供たちをお寺に連れて行くんだ
We show our appreciation for the children’s healthy growth,
and pray for future happiness.
子供たちの健康とハッピな未来を祈願してもらいます。
At that time, Boys and Girls wear Japanese Kimono.
その時に子供たちは着物を着たりします。（今や着物で解ります。）

what is this little bag kids have?
その小さなバックはなんだい？
Oh that is called Chitose Ame which means Chitose candy.
おっそれはね 千歳飴と言うもの、千歳キャンディだよ。
It is the candy for 753, very sticky candy and the candy is very long.
753のキャンディなんだ。とってもクッツやすくてそして長い飴なんだよ
These treats represents a long lasting healthy and happy growth.
末永く健康で丈夫に育って欲しいと言う願いが込められています。
Let me explain little bit more about 753 ceremony, Andy.
アンディ もう少し753を説明すると
In ancient times in Japan, the parents always
kept their children’s hair short.
とっても昔むかしの日本、親御さんは子供の髪の毛を
短くしていたらしい。
It is because, in those times ancient people believed
that all illness and flue came from having longer
hair for some reason.
その理由はね大昔の日本では長い髪の毛が病気や病を
持ってくると信じられていたからなんだ
Therefore, children were not allowed to have a longer hair style,
until they become the age of 3 years old.
それが理由で子供たちは3歳まで髪の毛を伸ばす
事ができなかったんだよ。
Also, back in those days, all boys were acknowledged
as a man when they becameage of 5.
またその時代、5歳になると男の子は男として
認められていたんだって。
That could be reason why most samurai movie’s children
are very matured and behave as an adult.
たぶん、それが理由で侍映画とかの中の子供たちは
とっても大人っぽいだろ。
Finally, by the age of 7, all girls were acknowledged
as adult woman.
最後に女の子とは7歳になると大人の女性として
認められるようになっていたんだ。
Anyway, after the Shrine, most of family go to
photo studio and take a picture.
お寺でお参りした後には必ずと言っていい程、
家族で写真館などで写真を取ります。
So whenever you have a chance to go your Japanese friend
house,you might see their children 753 picture.
アンディ もしも日本人の友達の家に行くチャンスがあれば、
七五三の写真見えるかもよ。
っと七五三を説明するには七五三をよく知らなければいけないと話しながら
思った英太郎でした。
大事なのはニュアンスと気持ち、シンプルな言葉で気持ちを伝えましょう。
